Position descriptions
Mixer
The mixer creates dough for Olde World Bagel's made from scratch products and forms the dough into raw bagels ready for baking. This is a key position because poorly mixed dough will turn into poor quality bagels, so successful candidates must exhibit attention to detail and quality that will produce the best product every time. Mixers generally work on two to three batches of dough at any given time, so the successful candidate must display the ability to multi-task. Batches of dough often weigh in excess of 100 lbs., so the successful mixer must have the ability to lift 50 pounds of dough and carry it short distances from the mixing bowl to the cutting table. Forming the bagels from the dough requires the use of a special machine. The mixer will have to learn to operate that machine efficiently and keep it in good condition. A work day is generally 5-7 hours depending on the amount of dough needed, so the work week may run 6-7 days with shorter shifts.
Baker
The baker prepares bagels and pastries for the company's retail, wholesale and catering operations. The successful candidate must be at least 5' 6" tall in order to operate the bagel oven and must be able to bake large numbers of bagels with efficiency and high quality levels. This requires the ability to multi-task. While baking bagels, the baker may also be proofing, baking and finishing pastries. Once again, the successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to multi-task with efficiency and quality. At the completion of baking, the baker will assist in finishing and packaging baked products for delivery to customers. There are multiple shifts that bakers fill. These will be discussed during the interview, but it is safe to say that the baker's schedule will be pretty much set and stable once a shift is assigned
Delivery Driver
The Delivery driver operates a company-owned mini-van to deliver bags of bagels and trays of pastries to our wholesale customers. The route is about 90 miles and reaches 12-30 customers depending on the day. Bagels are placed in grocery bags, so there is not really any heavy lifting. Some sites require deliver to internal kitchens, so there will be some carrying of bags. Work starts at 2:30AM and lasts until 8:00AM daily. The successful candidate must be able to show a clean driving record, an ability to remember and run the route efficiently, and a personality that will represent Olde World Bagel to customers in a positive light. Pay depends on experience and performance.
Counter Staff
Counter staff people provide high quality to Olde World Bagel's retail customers. Successful candidates must present a neat, clean, friendly and competent image to our customers. They must be able to take customer orders, then quickly and accurately complete those orders. When training is complete, counter staff should be capable of managing 2-3 orders at a time for faster service. Successful counter staff will be able to switch jobs between working the cash register, managing orders, helping at the coffee bar, and cleaning/stocking the service areas as conditions dictate. Successful candidates must be able to lift 50 pounds and have no health conditions that would prohibit them from doing the slicing and food preparation tasks required on the line.
The successful candidate for this position will have a relatively predictable schedule, but must be able to work on Sunday. The position is a full time position that starts at $7.25/hr and may go higher depending on experience and performance.
Shift Leader
The shift leader is a counter staff person with the added responsibilities of:
- Seeing that the afternoon staff completes all work properly
- Dealing with customer or operational issues that may arise in the course of business.
The morning shift leader will manage employee breaks, manage special call in orders and run the coffee bar.
The afternoon shift usually has a lower customer load and can therefore pay attention to cleaning and resetting the facility for the next day.
In each case, there is a specific list of closing duties to be completed each day.
The successful candidate for this position will have a relatively predictable schedule, but must be able to work on Sunday.
Dishwasher
Dishwashers wash the pots, pans, trays and utensils used each day to serve our customers. Dishes are done by hand in a three compartment sink. In addition, dishwashers prepare 8oz tubs of cream cheese that customers purchase with bulk bagels. The current position is a part time position for Friday-Sunday. The dishwasher will arrive around 2:00PM on Friday and Saturday and work until close at 7:00PM. On Sunday, the dishwasher will work from 11:00AM to 4:00PM. Successful candidates must be able to lift 50 pounds and have no health conditions that would prohibit them from doing the job.
Prep
Prep people get food ready for the company to deliver to its customers. Tasks consist of preparation of items for baking; baking (muffins, quiche, lasagna, bagel dogs, calzones, cookies, brownies, etc.); salad preparation; slicing (meats, vegetables and cheeses); mixing flavored cream cheeses; and assembly of orders for our north store and catering customers. Successful candidates will have the ability to multi-task to complete this variety of activities in the most efficient manner and meet delivery deadlines.
At present, prep people work from 2:00AM until 10:00AM in order to meet early morning delivery demands while maintaining product freshness. The position will be at least two days a week and could be expanded to meet increasing work demands.
